CODA, music beyond the algorithm
CODA is an independent music platform dedicated to discovering new sounds that exist outside the mainstream and beyond the reach of algorithms.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between artists who lack a voice on major platforms and an audience eager to hear fresh perspectives.
That said, we don’t believe algorithmic recommendations are inherently bad. On the contrary, they can be a powerful tool for discovering established bands that—while well-known to some—might be new to you. What is wrong with someone born in the 21st century listening to Nirvana and, as a result, having Spotify or YouTube recommend the Pixies or Black Flag?
These recommendations are relatively efficient for established acts because of the sheer volume of data accumulated. Every stream acts as a “silent vote,” allowing platforms to link artists together and drive further plays.
But what happens to the smaller bands—the ones the platforms don’t have enough data on? If we rely solely on automated recommendations, discovering niche or up-and-coming acts becomes a challenge, ultimately stifling the growth of emerging artists.
CODA is our way of doing our part, ensuring that those who truly care about new music can look beyond the algorithm.
